The John's Pass Sandbar Guide

The John's Pass sandbar is the worst-kept secret on Florida's Gulf coast — a stretch of waist-deep, gin-clear water and white sand that appears just inside the pass, where locals anchor up, turn up the music, and spend whole days standing in the Gulf like it's a swim-up bar. This guide is everything we tell our own guests, written by the crew that's out there every single day.

Where is it, exactly?

Just inside John's Pass — the inlet between Madeira Beach and Treasure Island — on the calm, bay side of the bridge. From our dock at Madeira Beach Moorings Marina it's less than five minutes by boat. You cannot walk or drive there: the sandbar is only reachable by water, which is exactly why it never feels like the packed tourist beach a half mile away.

When to go

• Low-to-mid tide is prime — more sand above water, bigger "beach."
• Weekday mornings feel like a private island. Weekend afternoons are the party.
• Sunset is the show. The pass faces the Gulf, so golden hour lands right on the water. (Our sunset cruise exists for a reason.)

What to bring

• Cooler with drinks and ice (every one of our boats includes the cooler — bring your own ice)
• Sunscreen — the water reflects; you'll burn twice as fast as you think
• Water shoes for little kids (occasional shells underfoot)
• A float or water mat (included on our boats) — prime real estate is a floating seat
• Trash bag: the rule of the sandbar is it leaves cleaner than you found it

The unwritten rules

• Idle speed only near the sandbar — kids swim here.
• Music is welcome; competing sound systems are not. Read the room.
• Dolphins cruise the pass daily. Admire, don't chase — it's the law and they hang around longer for the boats that behave.
• Everything you bring goes home with you.

Getting a boat

You can rent a pontoon and drive yourself (born before 1988: just go; after: a quick 30-minute online boater card and you're legal), or add a captain and be a passenger on your own private boat. Feeling adventurous? Pair the sandbar with a Shell Key Preserve charter for the full Gulf day.
